~Taking the sting out of Sustainability~

Green-Nettle Textile

Our project,” Sustainable Sting”,engages local communities to establish stinging nettle plantations on non arable steep slopes.

By converting nettle stalks into a linen-like fabric, we create an eco-fabric out of natural rather than synthetic materials and employ thousands of artisans across the globe. Our project has benefits beyond the current generation. With the success in nettle eco-fiber production, we will reduce the need for conventional fibre and in turn the amount of greenhouse gases produced during conventional fiber production. Our eco-fiber is dyed using natural plant dyes.

“Green Nettle Textile” is one of five winners of the 2019 Global Change Award, powered by the H&M Foundation. Together, we can bring this idea to life. #LetsChangeClothes

Nettle Eco-Fiber

World population is on increase, but land doesn’t. Local communities are thus forced to encroach steep slopes for farming.

RESULTS? high soil erosion.River pollution both by siltation and leaching. Steep Slopes are not sustainably productive and this leads to poor yields and thus the farmers end up incurring losses.

Green Nettle Textile team chose to see an opportunity where others saw a challenge. Demand for clothing increases with the high population growth in the continent. Producing these in a conservative way is a gateway to a sustainable future. Our solution is simple yet groundbreaking: work with Mother Earth, not against her.

Stinging nettle which is native in these areas is a true survivor, requiring just a bit of sun, a little amount of water, and whatever soil already exists. In return, the plant grows stalks that can be transformed into quality eco-fabric. Better still, process leftovers can be converted into different commercial products. This revolutionary approach will provide jobs and nutrients to over 200,000 smallholder farmers across Kenya. The project is also easily scalable.

Nettle is an exciting alternative to conventional fabric, and it’s avant-garde in spirit: while the name suggests itchiness or stickiness, it is actually smooth, luxurious, and very elegant. Take the sting out of sustainability…support the forward-thinking creatives of “Green Nettle Textile” today.

Insects Habitat

Apart from environmental conservation {growing stinging nettle on the steep slopes offer cover crop preventing erosion)and livelihood improvement, the initiative offers more benefits. Stinging nettle conserves biodiversity by habitating different insects and animals with endangered Aberdare Chameleon being important in our beachhead region
Stinging nettle is a multipurpose plant, the green nettle textile concentrates on stalks for fibre extraction, nettle leaves and the shoots are directed for use in cosmetics and alternative nutrition industries.

Our project has benefits beyond the current generation. With the success in nettle eco-fiber production, we will reduce the need for conventional fibre and in turn the amount of greenhouse gases produced during conventional fiber production. Our eco-fiber is dyed using natural plant dyes.

Nutritional Value

We go beyond fashion, Nettle leaves can be processed to extract organic fungicides and fertilizers.

We contribute to a healthy population. Nettle is a hardy crop and the only remaining vegetable during an extended dry spell. This helps in fighting micro starvation during this period.

Nettle is high in iron. Dry nettle shoots can be used as part of relief food as an iron supplement. With the high concentration of beneficial phytochemicals, nettle for long has been used in animal and human alternative prophylactic medicine.
